Yes. Valley taps run around 16 grains per gallon, and “very hard” officially starts at 10.5 — which is why scale builds up so fast on fixtures, water heaters and appliances here.
It’s how water hardness is measured — the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in each gallon. One grain is about 17 milligrams of dissolved mineral. The higher the number, the faster scale forms in your home.
It depends on your home size and water use. We give a flat quote after a free water test, so there are no surprises.
No. Softeners remove the hardness minerals; they don’t make water taste salty. For drinking water we can add reverse osmosis.
